When a fixed address helps

When you might
need a static IP

A static IP can help with these setups. Everyday browsing, cloud apps and video calls usually work without one.

Access to business systems

Give your IT team a fixed source address for systems that allow access from approved IP addresses.

Remote access

Use a consistent address for a VPN server at your premises, with access and authentication configured by your IT team.

Hosted services

Use a fixed address for a server or other service at your premises. Your router and firewall need to be configured for access.

What changes from the standard connection?

Our default broadband uses carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), sharing public IPv4 addresses across connections. The static IP add-on gives your line its own public address. Incoming access still depends on your router, firewall and application settings.

The practical details

Before you add one.

Tell us what your application needs and we’ll help you check the options.

Do I actually need a static IP?

Most everyday browsing, cloud apps and video calls do not need one. A static IP is useful when a service needs a fixed public address, such as an IP allowlist or a VPN server at your premises. Many outbound VPNs and cloud-based remote-access services work through CGNAT; check your application’s requirements.

Can I add a static IP later?

Yes. You can add or remove a static IP at any point in your contract. Contact our team and we'll update your account.

What kind of address is the static IP?

A dedicated public IPv4 address assigned to your line, outside carrier-grade NAT.

Will a static IP slow my connection?

No. The address itself has no effect on speed.

How long does the address stay the same?

The address is assigned to your line for as long as you have the add-on.

Can I get more than one static IP?

Yes, larger blocks are available for business customers. Get in touch and we'll talk through what you need.
